Recruiting Gen Z Team Members: How to Build an Aligned, Long-Term Chiropractic Team

If you’ve hired recently, you’ve probably heard some version of this from another practice owner: “Young people just don’t want to work anymore.”

I don’t believe that’s true.

After coaching hundreds of chiropractic practices over the years, I’ve learned that every generation brings unique strengths and unique challenges. Gen Z is no different. They aren’t impossible to hire, and they certainly aren’t impossible to keep.

What they are looking for has simply evolved.

If we continue recruiting and leading the way we did 20 years ago, we’ll continue struggling with high turnover, disengaged employees, and constant hiring cycles. But if we’re willing to understand what motivates today’s workforce while maintaining high standards and accountability, we can build exceptional teams that stay for years.

The goal isn’t to lower your expectations. The goal is to become the kind of practice that the right people want to build a career with.

Understanding Gen Z

Generation Z, generally those born between 1997 and 2012. is entering the workforce in greater numbers every year. Many of your next chiropractic assistants, front desk coordinators, rehab specialists, and marketing team members will come from this generation.

They’ve grown up in a world of smartphones, social media, rapid technological change, and constant access to information. As a result, they often value different aspects of employment than previous generations.

Many Gen Z employees are looking for:

  • Purpose beyond a paycheck
  • Opportunities to learn and grow
  • Clear communication and expectations
  • Frequent feedback
  • Healthy work-life balance
  • Positive workplace culture
  • Leaders who genuinely invest in them

Notice that “higher salary” isn’t the only item on that list. Compensation matters, of course. But it’s only one piece of the equation.

Sell Your Mission, Not Just the Position

One of the biggest hiring mistakes I see is practices posting job descriptions that simply list duties and requirements: answer phones, schedule patients, collect payments, clean rooms.

That doesn’t inspire anyone. People want to know why their work matters.

Instead, paint the bigger picture. Explain how your team changes lives. Talk about helping patients avoid surgery, return to activities they love, or live pain-free. Share your office culture and values.

People don’t just apply for jobs. They apply for missions they believe in. Especially Gen Z.

Culture Starts Before Day One

Recruitment doesn’t begin when you post a job opening. It begins every day through your online presence. Before accepting an interview, many candidates will visit your:

  • Website
  • Google reviews
  • Social media pages
  • Team photos
  • Employee testimonials

They’re asking themselves one question: “Would I enjoy working here?”

If your online presence only talks about services and promotions, you’re missing an opportunity. Show your team. Celebrate birthdays. Share community events. Highlight staff accomplishments. Post behind-the-scenes moments.

Let potential employees see a healthy, supportive culture before they ever submit an application.

Be Clear About Expectations

One misconception about Gen Z is that they dislike structure.

In reality, many thrive when expectations are crystal clear. Confusion creates anxiety. Clarity builds confidence. During the hiring process, explain exactly what success looks like.

Discuss:

  • Daily responsibilities
  • Performance expectations
  • Office standards
  • Growth opportunities
  • Training process
  • Accountability systems

When everyone knows what winning looks like, everyone has a better chance of succeeding.

Invest in Training

One of the fastest ways to lose a new employee is to throw them into the deep end.

We’ve all heard it before: “Just shadow someone for a few days.”

That’s not training; that’s observation. The best practices have documented systems for nearly every role. Checklists. Videos. Standard operating procedures. Skills assessments. Regular coaching meetings.

The more structured your onboarding process, the faster new employees become confident contributors. Great teams aren’t found. They’re developed.

Coach More Than You Correct

One characteristic many younger employees appreciate is ongoing coaching. That doesn’t mean constant praise or lowering standards. It means regular communication.

Don’t wait until the annual review to discuss performance. Provide quick feedback after situations happen. Celebrate improvements. Correct mistakes privately. Ask questions instead of making assumptions.

Great leaders spend more time coaching than criticizing. That approach builds confidence while maintaining accountability.

Create a Career Path

Many practice owners unknowingly communicate that every position is a dead-end job.

Gen Z wants to know:

“Where could I be in two years?”

“What skills can I develop?”

“Can I grow here?”

Even in a smaller chiropractic office, you can create growth opportunities.

Perhaps a chiropractic assistant becomes:

  • Lead CA
  • Training coordinator
  • Marketing coordinator
  • Community outreach coordinator
  • Patient education specialist
  • Office manager

Growth isn’t always about titles. Sometimes it’s about increased responsibility, new skills, leadership opportunities, or continuing education. People stay where they continue growing.

Hire for Values Before Skills

Skills can be taught. Character is much harder to teach. When interviewing candidates, don’t just evaluate experience. Evaluate alignment.

Look for people who naturally demonstrate:

  • Coachability
  • Integrity
  • Empathy
  • Dependability
  • Positive attitude
  • Strong communication
  • Desire to learn

The most successful hires often aren’t the ones with the strongest résumé. They’re the ones who fit your culture. I’ve seen practices transform simply by becoming more intentional about hiring people who align with their mission and values.

Technology Matters

Gen Z has grown up with technology integrated into nearly every aspect of life.

If your hiring process still involves printing paper applications, manually scheduling interviews, and waiting weeks between communications, you’re creating unnecessary friction.

Modern candidates appreciate efficient systems. Simple online applications. Text message updates. Digital onboarding. Training videos. Shared digital resources. Technology doesn’t replace relationships. It enhances them.

Retention Starts With Leadership

Many owners believe employees leave because of pay. Sometimes that’s true. But often they leave because of leadership.

People want to feel seen. They want to know their work matters. They want consistency. They want trust.

As leaders, we set the emotional temperature of the office. When we communicate well, recognize contributions, provide direction, and genuinely care about our team’s growth, retention naturally improves.

No generation wants to work in a toxic environment. Every generation wants to feel valued.

Build the Team That Builds the Practice

The best chiropractic practices aren’t built by one extraordinary doctor. They’re built by extraordinary teams. Your systems matter. Your marketing matters. Your clinical excellence matters. But none of it reaches its full potential without the right people carrying out the vision.

Recruiting Gen Z isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about becoming clearer in your mission, stronger in your leadership, and more intentional in developing people.

When you create a culture of purpose, accountability, growth, and appreciation, you’ll attract team members who don’t just want a job. They’ll want to build something meaningful alongside you. And those are the people who help create practices that thrive – not just for the next year, but for decades to come.
