Cracking the Code of Day 1 & 2 Sales: The Recipe for Success With Dr. Daniel Bai

AOC BlogCover V58 01

In our latest episode of the Alpha Omega Biz Dev Podcast, Daniel Bai, founder of CloseForChiro, offered invaluable advice on the intricacies of sales training, patient interactions, work-life balance, team building, and long-term relationship building in the chiropractic business.

Since beginning his practice in 2001 after graduating from Life University, Dan’s journey has been shaped by overcoming adversity. His experience in sales led him to develop CloseForChiro that has trained over 8,000 doctors, with an impressive 4.1x average ROI within just three months for participants.

Over 10 years ago, I was a student sitting in one of Dan’s boot camps in Costa Mesa, California. It was a pivotal experience that shaped not only my career but also my team. In fact, my current associate, who’s been with me for 5 years, was there too, and that shared foundation is one of the reasons why I asked him to join my practice. The principles Dan taught me back then, especially for day 1 and day 2 communications, still guide me today.

The Reality of Success: No Magic, Just Work

Everyone is always looking for the easiest way to succeed, but here’s the truth: there’s definitely an easier way, but there’s no magic solution. Success requires hard work, repetition, and building the fundamental skills that many of us don’t have right out of school.

When Dan graduated from Life University in 2001, he was confident and ready to conquer the world. He thought he had everything figured out. He dove headfirst into his chiropractic career, convinced that his skills and enthusiasm would be enough. But reality hit hard. Despite bringing in 90 new patients in six months, only a handful remained after a few months.

It was a tough lesson, but it led him to realize that he had a sales problem. At first, Dan resisted the idea—like many, he thought sales were sleazy and had no place in chiropractic. But over time, he learned that modern sales aren’t about tricking people; they’re about understanding and communicating value. He looked outside the chiropractic industry to find the knowledge he needed, adapting strategies from fields like pharmaceutical and medical equipment sales.

This journey taught him that success doesn’t come from enthusiasm alone—it requires a solid, scientific approach. It’s about doing the work, learning from the best, and continuously refining your skills. There’s no shortcut, just a commitment to the process.

Focusing on the Patient: A Shift in Perspective

In his insightful discussion, Dan emphasizes the significance of shifting our focus from ourselves to the patient. This simple act of prioritizing the patient’s needs and concerns nurtures a deeper connection and opens the door for genuine understanding. Dan also highlights the value of restraint in our interactions. Resisting the urge to interrupt or jump to conclusions allows patients to fully articulate their experiences and concerns.

His approach might ruffle some feathers, but with a strong track record, he is confident in saying this: Selling isn’t about showing off your credentials or impressing your patients with how great you are. It’s about understanding them.

Too often, practitioners spend valuable time trying to sell themselves, listing degrees, experience, or even famous clients. But here’s the truth: It’s not your patient’s job to get to know you—it’s your job to get to know them.

In your initial consultation, aim for 90% patient expression and only 10% doctor talk. This shift requires restraint, but it’s crucial. By holding back, you actually build more power in the conversation, creating space for your patients to express their needs fully.

Remember the principle of “Power through Restraint”—the more you listen, the stronger your influence. And sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply shut up and let your patients speak.

This approach may feel uncomfortable at first, but with practice, you’ll see the difference it makes in patient trust and outcomes. The next time you’re tempted to fill the silence, resist it. Focus on what really matters—understanding your patient.

Navigating the Tightrope: Balancing Work and Life

Work life balance

Dan’s discussion also touches upon the delicate balance between professional and personal life. As practitioners, we often find ourselves immersed in the demands of our work, making it challenging to carve out time for ourselves and our loved ones.

People often ask how Dan manages to balance being a family man with running a thriving consulting business focused on day 1, day 2 strategies. He says: I wish I could say I’ve got it all figured out, but the truth is, I don’t. Balancing work and life is my biggest challenge, and I’m still working on it—literally.

As a self-proclaimed workaholic, Dan is constantly trying to find the right balance. It’s not easy, and he is even receiving coaching on it. The key for him has been learning to compartmentalize his day—putting his life into boxes so he can focus on each area without getting lost in the chaos. When everything gets jumbled together, he’s completely off track.

He also has an amazingly supportive wife who helps keep him grounded. Her tolerance and understanding have been crucial in making everything work. Without her, Dan admits he may have gone down some pretty dark rabbit holes. While he’s still figuring things out, he’s doing the best he can, and very grateful for the support system he has.

What makes me respect Dan even more is his willingness to be vulnerable about work life balance and that he is still striving to achieve it. I feel that this quality of being relatable is what draws many chiropractors to him and CloseForChiro.
